Meaning components in the constitution of Russian verbs: Presuppositions or implicatures?

چکیده
In this paper we discuss the inferences triggered by perfective accomplishments and two verbal prefixes (the completive prefix doand the iterative prefix pere-) in Russian. Contrary to most works that attempt to analyze these inferences as presuppositions, we show that there is no ground for such a claim and argue that the inferences discussed here are better analyzed in terms of entailments and scalar implicatures. We use standard tests from previous research on semantic and pragmatic presupposition. For those cases where the standard tests prove to be insufficient, we provide empirical data from a questionnaire we conducted. The methodology used to construct the questionnaire is based on the results of an empirical study by Chemla (2009).

Scalar Implicatures of Russian Verbs
In this paper we address the common claim that perfective verbs presuppose the initial phase (or a process part) of events denoted by them, and assert their final phase (or a culmination part), while the meaning of imperfective verbs lacks both these components. Different formulations of this claim have been proposed by Padučeva (1996, 2011) and Romanova (2006) for Russian, and by Dočekal and K...
متن کاملQuantifier Acquisition: Presuppositions of “every”
Three components of determiner meanings – truth conditions, implicatures, and presuppositions – have been identified. One of the major findings in acquisition, related to the truth conditions of the quantifiers, has been that children go through at least two stages of non-adult interpretation of the quantifier every (Philip, 1995). More recently, researchers (Noveck, 2001; Gualmini et al., 2001...
متن کاملProjection and belief in K’ichee’: two examples of crosslinguistic semantic variation
Dan Velleman, University of Texas at Austin This paper presents a study of projective meaning — a category which subsumes presuppositions and conventional implicatures [1, 2, 4] — in the Mayan language K’ichee’. The study is based on a set of diagnostics developed by Tonhauser et al. [5], which are meant to be applicable in fieldwork situations in any language. We find the Tonhauser et al. prot...
متن کاملMental models and pragmatics: the case of presuppositions
We claim mental models are a framework that allows to shed light on the phenomenon of presuppositions. A plan-based lexical representation for verbs, together with the eeect of conversational implicatures that discharge possible mental models, are the key features of this proposal.
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Sense and Implicature
This thesis is a both a descriptive and theoretical examination of implicatures, parts of the contextual meanings of utterances that are separate from their sense, their main point. The empirical taxonomy I describe draws on the work of Grice (1975), but fleshes out two important subcategories of implicature that he did not discuss in detail. One of these subcategories is the conventional impli...
